For many people, a mountain is something to look at.

For Māori, a maunga can be so much more than that. A maunga is an ancestor. It is part of our whakapapa (ancestry), our identity, and the stories that connect us to the generations before us.

When we share our pepeha (introduction), we name the places that hold us. Our waka (ancestral canoe), our maunga, our awa (river), our marae (meeting grounds), and our iwi (tribe) are not simply locations—they tell the story of who we are and where we come from.
