According to Māori, Taranaki once lived in the center of the North Island, with all the other North Island volcanoes. The beautiful Pihanga was coveted by all, and a great battle broke out between them. Tongariro eventually won and inflicted great wounds on the side of Taranaki, causing him to flee. He went west and formed the deep gorges of the Whanganui River. He was eventually blocked by the Pouakai Ranges, and as the sun came up Taranaki became petrified in his current location. When Taranaki conceals himself with rainclouds, he is said to be crying for Pihanga. This sterling silver pendant depicts a topography map of Taranaki mountains. It comes with a standard cable chain, 50mm long. Handmade in Aotearoa, New Zealand. **Please note due to this being made to order it can take approx. 2 weeks to arrive. Overseas will be longer. **
